Texas is big.
Texas is big.
"Texas, the real o'l bandit country. Where the old ways still exist, where cowboys still are."
— John Marston

Texas is one of three territories in Red Dead Revolver 3dn edition and Red Dead Redemption and it is also the largest. It also plays a role in the epilogue level of Rootin' Tootin', Cowboy Shootin'.

Texas borders Louisiana to the east, Arkansas to the northeast, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west, and an international border with the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south and southwest, despite the typical prevalence of redneck racism towards the Hispanics. In the RD series, this was especially prevalent and still is as of today.

Description[]

This territory is characterised as a largely rugged and old wilderness in the process of colonisation as of the 1880's. As such, there is an expected presence of wild animals and bandits.

Major industries in Texas include farming and ranching, as seen with the MacFartlands and the Warthingtons, oil, as seen on Planeview and transportation, as most towns have stagecoaches. There's also a warehouse complicit with all sorta criminal actives in Thief's Town, although that's not the prime income for Texas and its residents. The state has attracted some immigrants (domestic and foreign) to work on the railways and other developments occurring, most of them being of Mexican or Asian (specifically Chinese) descent. There are hints of the territory's previous Spanish/Mexican heritage, in terms of place names and architecture, as Hispanics were prevalent in Texas before the white man blew them away.

By the end of the 19th century, the region is going through some hard times, as Thompson Town has been hit by a cholera outbreak and most people left it, and the Williamson Gang runs frequent and terrorises all around the place, with local law enforcement being totally ineffective or corrupt in responding to the crisis in their jurisdictions. Other criminal gangs include Irish's Gang and British's Gang who run around the state and cause trouble. However, according to one resident of the MacFarlane's Ranch, the most troubling part about them is their attitude. Silver Town appears to be an economic and boom town, competing with the ever-losing Thompson in a bid for a key railway connection.

When Nate Johnson is elected president in 1886, Texas has stabilised to a certain degree, as Silver Town, despite still being rather small, rapidly expands in terms of both population and economy, ultimately gaining the key railway connection and becoming the puppet of the Southwestern R. R. Company. Thompson Town meanwhile, finally succumbs to the cholera and the plague and quickly becomes abandoned as it is turned into a "ghost town" that's become overrun by hostile gangs, like Black Town before it, including Roe's Criminals and while law enforcement is now a bit stronger than they were in the past, they still struggle to cope with the many gangs and outlaws that continue inhabiting the region, earning Texas a reputation as being a "forever a cowboy's place."

Texas is also nicknamed the "Lone Star State" for the single star on its flag, symbolic of its former status as an independent country, the Republic of Texas, which was ran, unofficially, by Jacques Dixmor and his boys.

In the game, Texas comprises four regions: Indian Hills, Gaptooth Ride, Sand's Grass, and Rio Bravo. Although not really the capital, Silver Town is considered as such. The actual capital of the place is Austin. The territory of Cholla Hills meanwhile, is only explored in the OG RD Revolver.

Trivia[]

  • Some people at MacFarlane's Ranch or in Silver Town will mention that Nate Johnson was a mayor before he became President, although the situation was the same: he was always a corrupt bastard.
  • The train tunnel between Sand's Grass and Indian Hills and the snow capped canyon in north Sand's Grass are some of the few places in the game where the player is, technically, off the map. However, he can still be seen on the map for a bit if the player squints.
  • Silver Town is actually not that large, despite its status as an economic boom town. In fact, its decaying counterparts, Thompson Town and Black Town are much larger.
  • The "racing track" in Gaptooth Ride is the westernmost point in the game.
  • Unlike with the boundary between Texas and West Virginia, the transition of the music when the player moves between Texas and Nuevo Paraiso takes less time to register as Mexico is much closer to Texas than Texas is to WV.
  • Oddly enough, despite being the largest territory, none of the former members of Dutch's Gang are killed/captured in Texas.
  • Due to his high-s bounty reward, Arthur Morgan cannot explore Texas as the moment he steps on its border from Louisiana, an accurate Pinkerton sniper will snipe his as and Morgan's dead like no tomorrow. Even if Morgan dodges and evades the sniper, the moment he steps into Texas, an army of Pinkertons will come running from all sides and kill him. Unless Morgan waits for their coffee or smoke break, but not all of the agents take it at the same time, so it's impossible to avoid death.
  • As a testament to the region's lack of modernity compared to eastern states, much of Texas is underdeveloped and sparsely populated, such as MacFarlane's ranch, Thief's Town and even Silver Town itself.
  • North of Greenhole is an abandoned homestead which actually belonged to Paperguy John's parents before they got killed by outlaws, who stole the papers and John never inherited the land. This homestead is actually a moonshine shack, as empty bottles of moonshine or even whiskey can be found all around it. The only thing the outlaws left in tact.
