The Shady Sanitarium (also known as Shady Sanitarium for the Mentally Unwell, or erroneously "Shadowy Sanitarium") is a hotel-looking mental hospital near the Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada in Niagara Gorge, bordering New York.

The hospital is assumed to have been built ages ago, probably dating back to the Klondike gold rush era or thereabouts. Why the first owner of the sanitarium decided to name it like that is unknown. It is also not known if the building always served as a mental hospital, or was once a hostel or a hotel, judging by its looks. What is known is that the first owner of the hospital was Dr. Henry Diksmell, while it is today led by Dr. Takenberry, his great grandson's assistant who took ownership of the building once Diksmell's great grandsonny died.
The purpose of the sanitarium was always to take good care of the mentally unwell, be it normal nutjobs who can easily return back to society once they get better, well if they get better, and criminally unwell, who can stay there for a long time.
Unfortunately, like most mental hospitals, like Dixmor Asylum or the Happy Volts Asylum, the staff here is corrupt af.
This is presumably the location where Trevor Philips was taken following the events of GTA 5 (if he survived) and Pinky Gauthier due to the mental breakdown she suffered from bullying at the hands of Williams' Gang, shortly before she moved to Canada. Tony Montana has also been a patient of this establishment back when he was at a meeting in New York with Jack Fontana before he sold him out. However, he somehow managed to find a way to escape from it but Takenberry never bothered to contact the authorities.
During the years of 2019/19 AH to 2022/22 AH, the Sanitarium was the centre of a gold-smuggling operation, elaborately covered up by Takenberry, Miss Winslow and officer Hanson, who shared their profits with the Red Dragon Clan when Navado sent some of his men to Canada. Takenberry and the staff also allowed the Red Dragons to conduct experiments on some of the patients at the sanitarium that no one would miss. Takenberry would then report to the dead patient's loved ones that they died from natural causes or had an accident. The operation was profitable until rumours started to circulate over the number of patients dying at the hospital, so Takenberry and the Red Dragons parted ways and closed the gold smuggling ring. Luckily for Takenberry and the staff, no one was ever investigated, as officer Hanson managed to convince all of the detectives to not look into the Sanitarium.
It is rumoured that Abigail Peppercorn herself has connections at this Sanitarium and it was later revealed that it's true. Takenberry lets her conduct unethical and non-consensual experiments on people here, just read up Peppercorn's Experiments.
