Josiah Trelawny is a magician, outlaw, hypnotist, standup comedian, astrologer and trickster from Red Dead Redemption 2. He is a member of Dutch's Gang despite not being that much of a help. Alongside William Williamson, and Orville Swanson, he joined the gang around 1867, when Dutch van der Linde and his fellow gang members began settling out in the wild west. Josiah was born on April Fool’s Day of 1844 in Cornwall, England and presumably came to the United States of America through California, however he also claims to have once been to Brownsville, Texas and the tip of Florida. He often entertained Dutch’s wild bunch with magic tricks and jokes, and would even swindle others into the gang’s income. Entertaining tricks of his included juggling tomatoes, potatos or pears, making a pie magically appear out of his top-hat and shoving it into Billy Williamson's face, hypnotising Gicov Bell to roll on the ground and act like an actual snake (wow, foreshadowing), being able to make Orville sober, hypnotising Karen Jones or any other girl to pole-dance or hypnotising any well-off person into giving the gang some money or other valuables.

It is unknown whether or not he owns a pet rabbit and/or parrot, but he probably does and much like everyone else in Dutch’s gang, he has a horse.

Rolling with Douche's gang[]

The very first time Trelawny is first encountered in the game is in Valentine after the saloon fight. Josiah runs to Dutch's Gang where he reports to them that Sean MacGuire has been captured by Ike Scalding's bounty hunters. Dutch van der Linde sends Trelawny, Javier Escuella and Charles Smiff down to Great Plains at the camp, who are all later joined by Arthur Morgan after some bickering with Dutchy. When Arthur arrives, they survey Gold Town from a distance with Josiah providing binoculars out of his hat, but they quickly realise that the city is swarming with Pinkertons under the order of Larry Milton, meaning that they cannot risk entering the town to find Sean for they would all be killed, Trelawny included. Charles is sent to find a vantage point from a distance, while Arthur, Trelawny, and Javier follow the bounty hunters' boat in the river. After encountering some of the bounty hunters who put a captured Sean on the boat, Trelawny distracts two of them with magic tricks involving his hat and tie to allow Arthur and Javier to silently kill them. However, Josiah berated Javier and Arthur for killing the hunters prematurely, saying "Couldn't you fools have waited for my main trick of the day!!?? Nevermind..." Out of anger, Josiah leaves the hunt to save Sean and rides off back to Douche.

Trelawny is next seen when Hosea Matthews, Dutch, and Arthur are on a ride to move the camp to a new location as the Pinkerton Detective Agency figured out some of their spots. Trelawny is seen locked up in the back of a police wagon, which was being pulled by Sheriff Gray and his deputy, Archibald MacGregor (no relation to Evan). When Dutch asks what the evildoers did, the two lawmen tell the gang that Trelawny was involved in an illegal hat-making operation, and is being taken to the Rhodes' jail as a result. Suddenly, three other criminals in the wagon break free and break off the door of the wagin, forcing Arthur and Archibald to chase after them. After capturing the fugitives, the Sheriff lets Trelawny go on the suggestion of Hosea as gratitude for Arthur's help and also explains to him that creating magick hats and other materials should be legal, especially if no drugs were involved (something Trelawny was accused of, actually). Following his release, Trelawny moves with a bunch of bags to a circus caravan north of Rhodes.

Concerned over the reports of "agents in black" in the area and Trelawny's apparent disappearance from Rhodes, Dutch asks Charles and Arthur go to check on Trelawny, for he appreciates him as a member of the gang. The pair investigate his caravan plus all of the wagons and find signs of violence and blood splatter on the floor, before deducing that he must have been taken by bounty hunters or Pinkertons for questioning. The two track his trail to the woods, where they find two men camping - with Trelawny's broken candy cane next to them. Arthur defeats one in a fight when he accuses Arthur of eating dirt, while Charles subdues the other by holding him by the arms and forcing him to submit to his Indian burns. After being interrogated by the pair and beaten, the bounty hunters reveal that Trelawny is being held on a nearby abandoned farm and is awaiting trial. While Arthur kills the first bounty, Charles ties the other one up and puts him in an embarrassing position: face-first into his pal's bowls. The pair then venture over to the small farm, where they find more bounty hunters who have Trelawny captured and are planning on pissing into his hat and butchering his rabbit for dinner. The pair free Trelawny and his bunny and he manages to vanish the remaining bounty hunters hiding in the maize fields. Due to the ever-increasing danger, Trelawny decides to stay with the gang at camp for the time being.

Joshy later leads Arthur to a post office in Rhodes, where the clerk, Alden Cucumbers, sells excellent robbery tips from his criminal days in exchange for a gator pie a piece. After acquiring his robbery tip and selling him some apple pie instead of alligator, Josiah and Arthur head out to rob a stagecoach carrying Chester Damien and his secret box of gold. To do so, Trelawny puts on a performance to distract the coacher and the stagecoach guards with some tricks involving turning apples into oranges and bleeding out of his eyes, while Arthur knocks out Chester in the coach and takes the loot. Afterwards, the two split the money between them and the gang and Josiah tells Arthur he still owes him for ruining his magic trick back when they were rescuing Sean. Arthur gives him none, but Josiah magically makes some of his money appear in his own jacket pockets and rides off, satisfied, much to Morgan's annoyance.

Next, we see that Trelawny was the mastermind behind the self-proclaimed perfect robbery of The Grand Korrigan, a lavish, sexy riverboat carrying a substantial amount of cash in its vault, belonging to some rich crapitalists. He works his magic as off to ensure that Javier gets a job as a security guard on the vessel despite the captain's racism and that Strauss gets the job of spying from the balcony, dressed as a guard as well, on Desmond Bittler's poker cards to aid Arthur, and ensures that the card dealer gives Arthur the best cards imaginable so Morgan can win it all. Trelawny takes Arthur to the barbers to get a clean shave that will allow him to not be recognised as a member of Dutch's gang, and the tailor, for him to buy an appropriate suit as the boat is filled with rich scoundrel who hate the poor and their clothes. He and Arthur then get a ride to the riverboat in a carriage, and board it via the docks. After Javier and Arthur retrieve the money from the small vault following the latter's victory on the poker tables against Bittler, Trelawny is seen talking to Desmond, in an attempt to appease him after his loss and even offers to show him some magic tricks free of charge for his amusement. However, a shootout soon erupts when the guards discover that Arthur and Javier killed the racist guard, forcing Trelawny to houdini himself out to the water and swim to shore, while the other gang members had to fight their way out. Lastly, Javier, Morgan and Strauss also made it to the shore. After the money from the heist is shared between himself and Arthur the most, leaving Javier and Strauss bitter with some coins, he says his goodbyes to the crew and flies away on a black unicorn.

Trivia[]

  • He looked a bit similar to the human version of Shinnok.
  • He is the only pagan member of the Van Der Linde Gang, even though his first name is of Hebrew origin.
  • He is KGBSpetsnaz’s favourite character in the game because of his massive ambition and cunningness. A WAY better character than that evangelical Orville Swanson.
