This article, Francisco Navarro, is property of Bradwick Bradman.

Francisco Navarro was a Spanish-born merchant sea captain, pirate, and fortune seeker active during the decades leading up to the Golden Age of Piracy.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Navarro was born in 1682 to affluent parents in Toledo, Spain. His great-great uncle was a member of one of the final conquistador expeditions. In 1697, Navarro emigrated to the Caribbean seeking fortune and adventure on the high seas.

Merchant Career[]

Navarro joined a small crew of merchant sailors who operated out of the Bahamas in 1699, running livestock between the Bahamian isles and Cuba. In 1701, much of the merchant fleet was lost in a great storm. Navarro was the soul survivor on his vessel, a small sloop, and seized the opportunity to claim the ship as his own. By autumn of 1701, the sloop was repaired and Navarro was able to hire a crew of his own.

Life as a Pirate[]

Though he continued work as a merchant sailor for some time after the storm, life hauling cargo lost its allure quite quickly for Navarro. Francisco and his crew outfitted their sloop with guns and began seizing other merchant vessels in the spring of 1702. Navarro also took an interest in treasure hunting, and led his crew on many expeditions to hunt for Aztec gold.

Despite his young age, Navarro became incredibly wealthy from his plundering. In 1703, Navarro unofficially retired from piracy in order to search full time for a legendary treasure horde buried under an active volcano near modern Guyana. The expedition went south after debris from the eruption critically damaged Navarro's sloop. Most of his crew was lost, and the sloop sunk. Navarro was able to barter for passage to Antigua, where he stayed for over a year.

In March of 1705, Navarro joined the extended crew of legendary pirate Michael the Faceless in his effort to seize a British sea fort off the coast of Venezuela. The raid was successful, netting Navarro a vast fortune. The expedition also came across an unarmed merchant fleet while on their return voyage, which they plundered.

Death[]

Navarro was killed on March 21, 1705 by the crew of Jonathan Spooner, an English pirate hunter who had been charged with hunting down Michael the Faceless's crew. Micheal and his ship were also lost in the confrontation. It is unclear exactly how Navarro died, but first hand accounts state that he was mortally injured by a cannonball fired from Spooner's ship.
