Not to be pisstaken with El Ocho, the Mexican wrestler
El Indio (translated to The Indian) is the main antagonist of For a Few Dollars More. His actor was Gian Maria Volonte who also portrayed the main antagonist of the previous Dollars trilogy main antagonist named Ramon Rojo, both of whom were Mexican bandits. However, they were different characters.
Biography[]
El Indio was born April 9, 1840/160 BH somewhere in Mexico. His name is, or was Spanish for “the Indian”. This was due to him being of half Hispanic (probably Mexican) and half Native American descent. Much like Angel Eyes, he is highly enigmatic and not much else is known about him apart from those details. Nobody knows his real name or surname either, but that just adds the mystique to the character. He was a very ruthless outlaw and a leader of his gang of criminals thanks to his charisma. His second-in-command was named Groggy and his third-in-command was named Nino.
In 1872, El Indio was pursued by a couple of the Wild, Wild West’s best bounty hunters called the Man with No Name and Douglas Mortimer, the latter of whom was an ex-Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. Douglas Mortimer swore vengeance on El Indio because he brutally murdered his sister a few years before the film or the event takes place as a message to not mess with him or his gang again and probably also because of racial tensions as the Confederates hated the Mexicans and Native Americans. El Indio was very skilled at bank heists as well as escaping from prison, from which he escaped twice. He was also known for carrying a device with him that would play music and could hypnotise people who dared to screw with him. Douglas Mortimer and the Man with No Name both proved to be just as tough as he was, though. El Indio was also the only Dollars trilogy main antagonist to be killed by Douglas Mortimer rather than the Man with No Name.
