"Okay... So, I buy from the cat that goes by Merlon Ottie. What else is new? Honestly, though, in case you haven't realised, I'm a coloured man. Do you see any Jew boys running around? Cohen's operation is different. Y'all know he's in the bed with the Marinas."
— Big Doggie explains himself to Ray and Felps

Big Dog Tom is a minor villain character featured in L.A. Noire and a supporting enemy character in Mafia II. He is the second leader of the Afro-American street gang known as the Skulls and used to be in cahoots with Mickey Cohen and the Marinas in LA.

Info[]

In the events of Mafia II in New York, a gangster known as Earl runs the Skulls, and they are first encountered in mission "Home Sweet Home" (not Alabama) when Vito Corleone goes to steal a Ford Coupe for Andy Jones from the back of The Lone Star bar, which is owned by Big Dog Tom himself. However, Tom is not seen personally in this mission nor any other mission involving the Skulls, as the gang is represented by Earl at this point in the lore.

Big Dog plays a bigger role in the game L.A. Noire once he moves his gang to Los Angeles, where he runs an apparently clean and legit booking agency for musicians. However, the agency was actually a racket for dope peddling, as members of his gang, Cornell Tyree, Tyrone Lamont, James Bowe and Emmet were serious dope users themselves and dealers. Tom was also part of Mickey Cohen's stolen morphine racket, working as a supplier along with a cat known as Merlon Ottie, who he claimed was a "sissy for the Jews", particularly Lenny Finkelstein, Cohen's top supplier. Both collected supplies of morphine through deliveries from Ramez Removals store, which was ran by Jose Ramez. One of Big Dog's distributors was also Fleetwood Morgan, who would sell the morphine by strapping them to the bottom of popcorn cups at the Black Caesar food hut before Cole Phelps and Ray Buttowski come a knocking.

After the deaths of Lamont and Tyree from overdose, Morgan gave up Big Dog Tom as his supplier in the morphine distribution and as leader of the Skulls. At his music office, Hudson was confronted by the coppers Cole Phelps and Ray Buttowski, who searched his office and discovered supplies of morphine as well as reefer (meaning marijuana) hidden in his radio and a fiddle, which Phelps found a note for, which what frequency the radio would have to be set to, in order to trigger the hidden switch. After sending two Skulls to beat up the cops, which they failed, Tom was finally questioned. Despite his less forthcoming attitude, Biggie Tom eventually revealed he worked for Lenny Finkelstein and tat Jose Ramez was involved, then gave up Merlon Ottie, revealing his illegal gambling establishment and noted that he was like a slave to Lenny. Big Dog and his Skulls were to prison for drug trafficking and assault of police, however, Phelps promised to personally speak to the D.A. to help reduce his sentence in exchange for his cooperation. However, Phelps failed to realise this would be unnecessary, as Big Dog Tom used the connections he had to the Marinas to contact their lawyer, Juan El Tiger, for a lower prison sentence. It took a lot of begging, though.

After coming out of jail in about 2 years or so, Big Dog took all of the Skulls from jail and the streets he owned and moved into an apartment complex in Long Island and Hunters Point. It was here that Big Dog often tried to interfere with Leonardo da Vinci's operations in an effort to bolster his own gang's standing and reputation. He was allowed to do this under Don Raul Marina II's alliance. However, these efforts are usually in vain as da Vinci retaliates by taking down all of his fronts and rackets one by one.

At one point, fed up with Vinci Family's constant assaults on his gang and ventures, and for killing his right-hand, [[Ziggy (Mafia)]|Ziggy]]. Big Doggie hires a hitman to assassinate da Vinci, but he gets word of the hit and sends his assassin, Stephena Cojonez, to take care of Big Dog's first. Around this time, Merlon Ottie jumps back into the gang and rides Tom's coattails, like how he did Lenny the Fink's.

After all of his crime operations and most of his gang have been wiped out, Big Dog Tom and the remainder of his gang get jailed up once again. But like previously, Juan El Tiger promises to put a squeeze on the judge and the court to give them lighter sentences.

Death[]

Sometime in 1980 or 20 BH, Big Doggie, Ottie and their men all got killed in a prison riot by some members of the Red Dragon Triads. Big Dog got stabbed in the stomach before bleeding to death. In the end, the Skulls got eradicated the Wu Chu's men won the war. It is possible that the Red Dragon's connection to the Vincis was one of the reasons why they attacked Tom and his Skulls, not including the territorial dispute.

Trivia[]

  • Big Dog Tom, Raul Marina II and their men are the only characters to appear in both, Mafia II and L.A. Noire. Similar to Marina, his lower face and head model is a bit different in each game. Probably due to different cameras in the area. Or maybe Dog Tom got a plastic surgery in between, which could be, considering his wealth and status. Despite this, the former is actually more of a plausible theory. He is not the only character on the Wiki with this quirk, however.
  • His nickname is based on the slang term 'Dog' which African-Americans commonly use to describe their friends, similar to 'homie' or how Hispanics use the term "holmes". However, the African-American variant may also be spelled as "Dawg".
