Barbados is the main villain and a fake character from the book of Martin Krpan, where he opposes our only hero, Martin Krpan. He is one of the Ottomans who serves the Sultan and wants the Hapsburg (also spelt as Habsburg) empire to succumb to the sultan. Krpan however, cuts his head off and it doesn't grow back, hard.

Info[]

Since Martin Krpan is the book's only hero (and one in general in Slovenia), he needs someone to oppose him since the Habsburgs are the "good guys" here. Krpan lived under the fascist and evil Hapsburg regime back then and if they weren't enough already, he now needed Barbados to deal with as well, who was the enemy of both: Krpan and the Hapsburgs, and had the sultan's blessing. It is never mentioned who tf the sultan was back then nor when exactly the story takes place, but what is known is that Barbados was born in present-day Turkey.

Barbados' personality was that of a ruthless warrior who killed anyone that opposed him, whether they begged for mercy or not. He gained his empire's favour with this and was send to the Habsburg empire to confront the loyal warriors and nobles of Emperor John. Like Martin, Barbs was a giant of a man and very strong, but lacked a few of Krpan's pounds.

After arriving into the Hapsburg territory and slaughtering the border patrol, Barbados sends his men off as he knows he can win this all by himself, and sets himself a camp outside the imperial capital of Vienna and Johnny's own castle, just to spite him and have his eyes on the prize. Barbados challenged all comers who came after him and defeated all of John's knights, and even slay most of the city's top men and nobles, including the Crown Prince, John's very own unnamed son. His name was probably John II. Barbados cut the kneeling son's head off with his Turkish sword and threw it into the nearby river.

Meanwhile, John sees he has no choice but to summon Marty to Vienna via his stagecoach in order to spoil him rotten so he'd agree to fight as the Empire's last hope against the Turkish Invader. After Martin gets some feasting at the palace, he accepts the challenge, scandalising the court with his unctuousness, but honesty and homespun manner. Barbados gets an invite to the courtyard as well and grabs his kilijs and knives.

Death[]

Unfortunately for the Ottomen and the Turkish Giant, Krpan was stocked up on meat and superior weaponry and used his strength, ingenuity and said weapons, like a giant butcher axe and a caveman-like club to destroy and annihilate Barby by cutting his head off with the axe, like how he did to John's son. The battle was more of a squash battle on Krpan's part. Barbs' corpse was then send back to the sultan by the Habsburg mailman as a massage not to mess with Johnny.

Trivia[]

  • Barbados is also the name of a country in the Caribbean sea.
  • His nicknames are mostly based on humiliating him, his height and his onion-like turban.
  • His name stems from the term "barbarian", something which he was, but he's never called that in the book, though.
  • According to certain muslims, his entire character and concept is islamophobic and shouldn't even exist. Despite this, no one gives much dams.
  • Despite being an inch shorter than Krpan, the drawers, liberal bleeding hearts and artists are inconsistent with his image, as sometimes he is portrayed as being taller than Martin Krpan himself. They also can't decide if he has a full-on beard and moustache or just a moustache with earrings as depicted on his death image down below.
